I understand and fully agree that as leaders, it’s important to be fact-based, calm, and intentional as we drive key initiatives and guide our organizations forward. These traits are undeniably crucial for accomplishing great things.
However, I firmly believe that there is much more to propelling organizations forward than just these characteristics.
My earnest hope is that each of us can cultivate rewarding and enduring careers, collaborating with exceptional individuals whom we are eager to invest our time and energy in, while bringing positive change.
Personally, I have discovered that the most valuable component—the one that has the greatest impact as we reach new levels of success—is the infusion of passion into every business endeavor.
We all aim for the organizations we lead to succeed, to achieve our financial and performance targets, to establish a strong market presence, and to ensure our customers and partners are thrilled with the results we create together. I am convinced that it is our passion for people and our mission that makes the most significant difference in enabling unified teams and organizations to thrive.
I can identify three compelling reasons why passion is the most crucial ingredient in shaping our careers.
Three Reasons Why Passion is Essential:
1. People Make the Largest Impact
People make the largest impact in any successful opportunity. Engaging directly and personally with the people on our team and across our organizations makes a huge difference. As we engage and get to know the people who surround us, it is important we slow down enough to hear and see people…as people. Sometimes, it does require us to spend some extra time we don’t really have to give. Sometimes we need to go a bit out of our way for a quality connection with people. And we are all aware there are so many kinds of people. Some are easy to connect with and some are super difficult. Can we treat them all the same? How do we integrate their strengths into a team where some personalities don’t fit as well as others? All of this takes extra time, extra energy, and extra commitment. Committing to the people around us creates its own kind of energy. As people release their passion into a team and build the collective momentum which results, passion will carry us forward in a way that intellect, experience and talent can’t accomplish on their own.
2. Rallying Around a Common Mission
Rallying around a common mission, a purpose of value which can be understood, which can be clearly articulated for common acceptance, is so important to accomplish great success. Yes, we want to measure performance and validate the positive impacts of our efforts for the organization. We also achieve new heights for outcomes when the reason why we are stretching so far is personal, is commonly accepted as impactful in a positive way, and when the reason why we are doing something connects how we think with how we feel about the outcome. The mission connects our head and our heart. Again, we need to slow down if we are to invest time, thought and energy into a clear expression of the mission. We need to articulate mission clearly so people can reflect and see the personal impact for them to invest fully into what and who we are. It is our role as leaders in an organization; to be clear with how our mission is so important, it will require every ounce of our focus and our experience. If People are the engine to drive success, Mission is the essence which propels us to the highest of all levels.
3. Unifying People and Mission
If People make up the engine and Mission is the essence, Unifying the People and Mission together is the chassis on which the train races down the tracks to incredible outcomes. Unifying people is always a challenge. One way to drive unification is by inserting a common mission at the core. The actions required to bring all this together is another focus point all its own. Uniting people, mission, planning and action is a very complex endeavor. It will require us to slow down and be creative, innovative, and intentional to execute a series of unifying events to bring everything together.
Building our careers based on our passion for people and mission around a unifying experience can consume a lot of our personal energy. For me, when passion is at the center of who I am as a leader, those three elements have a real chance to come together. When they do, the best outcomes I have ever seen are the result. The organization is well served, our customers, partners and team members all benefit, and the world may never be quite the same again in either some small or hopefully, in a very meaningful way.
Passion is often associated with energy and momentum, making it seem counterintuitive that harnessing passion requires slowing down and reflecting. However, effectively uniting people and a mission through passion demands careful consideration of all connecting factors. While passion may ignite a desire to act swiftly, its true impact lies in the thoughtful guidance that allows teams and organizations to fully engage and leave a lasting impression. Investing time to passionately pursue what is important is essential, as passion has been a defining force in both my leadership and personal relationships.
